ARTIST BIO

Anney Bounpraseuth was born in 1983 in Australia and is an artist of Laotian heritage currently based in Sydney, Australia. She holds a Diploma of Fine Arts from South West Sydney Institute of TAFE (2003-2004, 2007) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.) from the college of Fine Arts (2010-2012).

Bounpraseuth's work draws heavily on personal history, memory, and cultural symbolism. With a vivid, kitsch aesthetic she describes as Cabracadabra or “Southeast Asian mum-style,” her practice honors the visual and emotional language of her mother, a Laotian refugee and machinist. Through a process she calls cr-appliqué, Bounpraseuth combines painting with salvaged textile waste and lived experience transforming trauma, especially around religion and identity, into narrative works that are both healing and humorous. Her practice explores post-traumatic growth through Edenic symbolism and reframes earthly paradise as a space of freedom, imperfection, and personal authorship.

Bounpraseuth’s recent works have been featured in Geographies of the Self at Redbase Art Gallery, Sydney (2022). She has also presented solo exhibitions at Bankstown Arts Centre, and at Fairfield City Museum and Art Gallery. She also curated the MCA ARTBAR at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
