Uswarman was born in 1982 in Palembang, Indonesia. He studied at Modern School of Design in Yogyakarta, majoring in Painting, and is currently based in Yogyakarta.
Uswarman’s artistic approach is rooted in spontaneous creation and personal reflection. His works tend to be expressive, layered with emotional depth, and often lean towards formalism and abstraction. Rather than relying on predetermined narratives, his practice is guided by instinct and an immediate response to the canvas—allowing emotions, gestures, and materials to interact freely and unexpectedly.
In 2019, Uswarman held his solo exhibition Life Report at Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta. The same year, he also participated in two group shows at the same venue: Redefining Chapter and Walking In the Rhythm. In addition, he has exhibited at Auckland Art Fair with Redbase Foundation in 2018 and 2019, and took part in exhibitions at Jogja National Museum, ION Art Gallery in Singapore, and Bentara Budaya Bali.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
