Gao Xiaowu (高孝午) was born in 1976 in Sanming, Fujian Province, China. He studied sculpture at Xiamen Art Academy and continued his education at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, graduating in 2004.
Gao’s work embraces “popular art” featuring rounded, humorous human figures that convey subtle social commentary on urbanization, social pressure, modern absurdities, as well as spiritual and ecological issues.
Together with Redbase Foundation, he participated in the 2024 Art Fair “AOTEAROA ART FAIR” at Viaduct Events Centre.
Gao has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Melbourne Festival, and Beijing Biennale, and held solo exhibitions such as Soft Violence. His works are included in collections like the White Rabbit Gallery and MoMA. He was selected for the 9th National Exhibition of Fine Art and received the Hurun Art Special Contribution Award.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
