Michael Eather was born in 1963 in Launceston, Tasmania. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania in 1983.
Eather’s practice revolves around symbolic and metaphorical narratives that form what he describes as a “philosophical landscape”—a fusion of abstraction, material, and imagination. His works span painting, sculpture, and mixed media, often incorporating motifs such as stingrays, stones, and atmospheric landscapes. His recent installation Stone Curtains (between heaven & earth), composed of suspended watercolor panels, embodies the duality of earth and sky, consciousness and matter.
In 2024, he participated in the group exhibition (Between) Heaven & Earth at Redbase Art Sydney.
Eather has held 28 solo exhibitions and participated in over 50 group shows. In 2003, he was listed in The Bulletin's Arts & Entertainment Smart 100 for his contributions to the Australian cultural landscape, especially his efforts in bridging Indigenous and non-Indigenous art practices.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
