Roger Mortimer was born in 1956 in Mangakino, New Zealand. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
Roger Mortimer’s artistic practice draws on illuminated manuscripts, medieval iconography, and nautical charts to explore postcolonial identity, mythology, and moral allegory. His intricate works often merge historical narratives with personal and national reflections.
In 2024, Mortimer participated in Tales of East and West at Redbase Art Sydney, followed by his solo exhibition Adams Island in 2025. His works were also showcased by Redbase at Art Fair Aotearoa (2025).
He has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally, including at Pātaka Art + Museum, Gus Fisher Gallery, and the Wallace Arts Centre. Mortimer is the Paramount Award Winner of the Wallace Art Awards, with works in major collections such as The Wallace Arts Trust, the University of Auckland, and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
