Chen Gelin was born in 1996 in Yulin, Guangxi, China. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2023. His graduation work, Convergence and Divergence, was acquired for the permanent collection of the CAFA Art Museum.
His artistic practice explores the expressive potential of linear fiber materials. Influenced by the traditional crafts of Chinese ethnic minorities—particularly the weaving of the Hakka and the brocade patterns of the Zhuang—Chen merges textile heritage with contemporary formal experimentation. Using steel nails as points and nylon threads as lines, he constructs spatial compositions that evoke light, speed, order, and a futuristic sensibility.
Chen's recent works have been featured in Melbourne Art Fair (2024), Art Jakarta (2024), and Aotearoa Art Fair in Auckland, New Zealand (2025). In 2024, he held a solo exhibition titled When the Beam is Readable at Redbase Art Sydney.
He has received several accolades for his contributions to contemporary art, including the National Inspirational Scholarship (2021, 2022), the Youth Art 100 Annual 101 Art Award (2023), and a residency at the TWT International Art Residency Program (2023).
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
