Michal Mitro was born in Slovakia in 1989. He graduated in Psychology and Sociology from Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. He later pursued studies in Sculpture and Sonic Arts at the University of Tasmania, Australia, followed by further studies in Intermedia and Digital Arts at the University of Technology in the Czech Republic. In addition, he studied Karawitan (traditional Indonesian music) at ISBI Bandung and attended a program at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.
Michal is a conceptual artist and composer whose practice explores the boundaries of what is considered “natural” and “normal” in contemporary life—often drawing attention to things that are overlooked or unconsciously accepted. Combining research, sound, light, and interactive technologies, his work critically investigates ecological entanglements, the human–nonhuman relationship, and the interplay between technology and perception. He aims to dissolve the divide between audience and artist by creating immersive and accessible environments.
In 2016, he held a solo exhibition titled Presense at Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
His recent projects include exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bratislava (2023), G99 Brno (Volta – Conditions Are Now Planetary, 2022), Vasulka Kitchen, and Prototyp Festival, with additional presentations in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, and the UK. In 2022, he was selected as a finalist for the Oskar Čepan Prize. He is also involved as a curator at ssesi.space and a researcher at STELLA (Somatic Tech Lab).
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
