Michael Downs, born in Skipton, England, is an artist with degrees from Bath Academy of Art and UNSW, and has taught at over 50 top art schools worldwide, including as Head of Postgraduate Studies at the National Art School Sydney.
Downs is known for his uniquely shaped paintings that combine figurative and abstract elements, using wood, fabric, or photographs to create interactive three dimensional works.
He held a solo exhibition titled “Expanding Landscapes” at Redbase Foundation, Indonesia in 2025.
Michael Downs has exhibited in more than 70 solo shows and 300 group exhibitions across 20 countries, including at the Pompidou Centre and Barbican Centre, and has presented his Asian Urban Energies series in various Asian cities over the past 15 years.
