Lutfi Yanuar Sartono (b. 1994, Bandung, Indonesia) is a Bandung-based artist working primarily in painting. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Art, Bandung Institute of Technology (2017, cum laude), Lutfi develops his practice through lived experiences spanning urban life in Bandung and rural life in Kebumen, Central Java. His work merges tradition, nature, and contemporary life, exploring human survival, memory, and relationality through material, gesture, and instinct. Marble dust, sand, ink, embroidery, and ecological motifs are employed to evoke corporeal topographies, while narrative metaphors—such as the story of Adam & Eve—explore separation, reconnection, and the interplay of individual and collective experience.
Lutfi’s work often investigates plural cultural identities and human existence within natural and social environments. In 2019, he was a finalist for the UOB Painting of the Year and the Barli Award #1, and in 2022, he participated in the 9th Beijing International Art Biennale at the National Art Museum of China.
He has held solo exhibitions including Menoreh Metafora (Orbital Gallery, Bandung, 2022) and Modern Eden (Yuan Gallery, Jakarta Art Hub, 2025). His work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Bandung Painting Today (Grey Art Gallery, Bandung, 2024), Art Jakarta (2Madison Gallery, Jakarta, 2023), Art Moment Jakarta (2Madison Gallery, Gandaria City, Jakarta, 2023), MANIFESTO VIII: Transposition (National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta, 2022), and THE LIGHT OF LIFE (9th Beijing International Art Biennale, National Art Museum of China, 2022).
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
