ARTIST BIO

The photography and video practice of Val Wens is an exploration of the complexities of identity within a contemporary visual arts context. Born in 1974 in Jakarta, Indonesia, currently lives and works in Castlemaine, Australia. He graduated from the School of Art and Design at UNSW. Wens’s practice spans painting, photography, and mixed media, combining digital printing, acrylic, and glass to explore the relationships between imagery, cultural symbols, and visual memory. His works reconstruct iconic visual elements to create tension between image and narrative, reflecting complex layers of culture and identity. Wens has held solo exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne and has work collected by Art Gallery of New South Wales; Artbank; European Cultural Centre, Venice; Gold Coast City Art Gallery; Murray Art Museum Albury; and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Tokyo.
