Simon Whetham, born in the UK in 1973, is an artist who has been developing a sound-based art practice since 2005. His work focuses on using sound as raw material for artistic creation. He captures environmental sounds through various techniques to reveal hidden or often unheard sonic phenomena. In his presentations, the physical space and objects within it become part of the artwork, functioning as instruments that respond to sound.
Specializing in experimental sound art, installations, and multidisciplinary collaborations, Whetham treats sound not just as background or support, but as the main artistic medium. He often works with field recordings from nature, industrial environments, and everyday objects to create immersive and sensory experiences.
In 2019, he held a solo exhibition titled “Composed During a Storm” at Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His work has also been featured in major international festivals and exhibitions such as Moers Festival (Germany), Madeiradig (Portugal), ACC Showcase (South Korea), Nakanojo Biennale (Japan), and Fresh Winds Biennale (Iceland).
Throughout his career, Simon Whetham has received several prestigious awards and grants, including the Grant for the Arts and Arts Council England Grant from Arts Council England, as well as support from the British Council for his international projects.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
