ARTIST BIO

Meliantha Muliawan was born in 1992 in Pontianak, Indonesia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 2014 and is currently based in Depok.
Meliantha’s practice centers on observing household items and their role in daily life, viewing them as silent witnesses to private rituals and unspoken social narratives. She frequently works with resin to “preserve” objects—both literally and poetically—offering a suspended moment where concealment and revelation coexist. Her use of acrylic on fabric mimics the tactile quality of clothing: intimate, protective, yet layered with meaning. Works such as The Truth of Happy Ending (2018) and What Day is Today (2019) demonstrate this duality, turning the mundane into metaphoric time capsules.

In 2018, Meliantha participated in two group exhibitions—FORMS of Diversity and Eyes of Matrix—at Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta. She has held solo shows like Translucent (Redbase Foundation, 2017).

Meliantha was a top-three finalist for the Young Artist Award at ARTJOG 11 in 2018. Her most notable recognition came in 2021, when she won the UOB Painting of the Year Indonesia. This award granted her a residency at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 2023, where she represented Indonesia at the regional level.
