ARTIST BIO

Jumaldi Alfi was born in Lintau, West Sumatra, Indonesia. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art at Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta and is a founding member of Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela (Jendela Art Group), one of Indonesia’s most prominent contemporary art collectives.

Alfi’s practice is marked by his sequential exploration of ideas and themes, often reflecting the intersection of Indonesian and Western visual languages. His works present an immediacy through expressive gestures, scribbles, markings, and text layered over structured compositions of landscapes or symbolic spaces. His painterly approach conveys emotional tension and conceptual depth, bridging personal introspection and broader cultural commentary. His drawings, often populated with shifting figures, contrast stillness and chaos, highlighting psychological states and existential questions.

He has been participating in various art exhibitions in Indonesian and abroad like; National Museum, Jakarta, Indonesia, NUS Museum, Singapore, and many
