Artist in Residence #4
Meliantha Mulyawan, a young artist from Pontianak, West Borneo currently residing in Jakarta, is a graduate of the Faculty of Visual Art and Design at Institut Teknologi Bandung. Her work frequently features children as subjects, utilizing colored ink and the unique medium of resin to create her art.
During her residency, Meliantha focused on observing children's behaviors and expressions. Her series, Translucent, employs resin as the primary medium, chosen for both its aesthetic appeal and its alignment with her personal reflective process. Translucent explores the contrast between child and adult characters in unexpected scenarios. Rather than presenting her figures as fully clear, Meliantha portrays them as translucent, allowing the resin to interact with light. This approach highlights aspects of childhood that are often overlooked. Despite the complexities in her subject matter, Meliantha remains dedicated to experimenting with both the portrayal of children and the use of resin in her work.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
