Artist in Residence #7
Marta Weglinska, born on March 16, 1990, in Lubing, Poland, earned her MA in Intermedia from the University of Arts in Poznan in 2016, following her BA in Painting from the same institution in 2014. She has engaged in numerous curatorial projects, solo and group exhibitions, and festivals across different countries. Marta's work often explores imagery, language, and space through a diverse range of techniques that frequently challenge conventional media. Her artistic outputs encompass films, art books, sculptures, installations, paintings, and photographs. She also writes and curates exhibitions, and has been a co-founder of Silverado Gallery since 2013.
During her three-month residency at the REDBASE Foundation, Marta is concentrating on a project inspired by Indonesian culture, delving into mythology, beliefs, traditional dance, and ancient texts. Her research focuses on both contemporary and historical aspects of Indonesian life, particularly in Central Java and Yogyakarta. The project investigates the timeless and universal unity of two supreme deities, male and female. It draws inspiration from various facets of Indonesian culture, including symbolic interpretations of nature, mythology and beliefs (such as Dewi Sri and the meaning of gunungan), traditional dance (like the Panji story), ancient literary works (including Wanban Wideya, the Javanese Panji narrative; Arjunawiwaha, Mpu Kanwa’s account of Arjuna’s marriage; and Sumanasantaka by Mpu Monaguna), and ancient architecture.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
