Born in Seoul in 1982, Sunyoung Park, a Meisterschüler of Richard Deacon, earned an M.F.A. in sculpture from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2013 and a B.F.A. in sculpture from SangMyung University, Seoul, Korea, in 2007. Currently, the artist holds a D.A. in sculpture and works as a lecturer in Seoul.
In 2011, during an exchange program with Patric Tosani at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, she began to integrate photography with sculpture. This artistic practice is evident in the three-dimensional volumes within her photosculptures, where she uses techniques such as cutting, layering, and folding to create hybrid forms and textures and transform the frame, occupying the exhibition space instead of hanging as flat images. Currently, her artistic focus is entirely devoted to expanding photosculpture in the realm of art and culture, exploring the placeness of diaspora, which plays a role in demonstrating post-colonial nomadic subjectivity in (post-)globalization. She has been invited to participate in various international and national, government- and industry-funded art projects. Her work has been widely exhibited in Korea, Indonesia, France, Germany, Switzerland, and many other countries.
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
