I Wayan Upadana, known professionally as Kacor, was born in 1991 in Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, and is currently based in Yogyakarta. Growing up in a region deeply rooted in artisanal traditions, he later graduated from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 2014, majoring in Fine Art. After relocating to Sewon, he became closely involved with Yogyakarta’s dynamic artist community, developing a visual language that merges craftsmanship with introspective sensitivity. His artistic grounding is shaped by an attentiveness to everyday surroundings plants, animals, and domestic landscapes which he translates into compositions that balance discipline, intuition, and quiet observation.
Kacor is widely recognized for his “Tensile Painting” technique, an innovative process that combines cut paper and duct tape to build multilayered surfaces suspended between drawing and relief. Guided by instinct and repetition, he depicts elements of flora and fauna such as banana trees, papayas, cacti, chickens, and dogs, rendering them through rhythmic cutting, layering, and stretching. His minimal palette and careful texturing emphasize a philosophy of attention, inviting viewers to slow down and “see and feel nature through taste, mind, and imagination.” By utilizing ordinary materials, he reimagines their humble function into forms of poetic resonance. Kacor has participated in numerous exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, including the Asian Students and Young Artists Art Festival (ASYAAF) at Gallery LVS in Seoul. His works have also been featured in Tumbuh, Redbase Art Sydney, (2025), Embarking on Wishful Journey, Redbase Foundation Yogyakarta, (2023), and Macam-macam, Redbase Foundation Yogyakarta, (2019).
We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
