AT A GLANCE

Across Indonesia’s vast archipelago, shaped by islands and volcanoes, art has never drifted far from the breath of nature. Ar(t)chipelago features Indonesian artists from Java to Bali, including Arya Sudrajat, Danni Febriana, Angga Deri Pradetya, I Kadek Suardana (Kacor), and I Wayan Upadana. They responded to the tension and harmony found between nature and humanity, and the past and present. Their works, like five converging streams, flow into a wider expanse of Indonesian contemporary art.

Arya reconstructs local memory through the residues of labour and craft; discarded fabric, wire, and wood pieced together as traces of time and endurance. Danni’s monochromatic paintings echo volcanic silence and eruption, embodying both destruction and renewal. Angga transforms everyday industrial and domestic objects into sculptural forms, turning the ordinary into a vessel for thought. Kacor uses layered paper and tape to build delicate rhythms of nature, rendering life’s pulse visible through fragile textures. Meanwhile, Wayan extends the Balinese philosophy of Rwa Bhineda, the balance of opposites, through resin and wood as he merges spiritual symbolism with modern sculptural language.

Together, their works form a unique visual landscape, rooted in place yet reaching outward to the world. It is a creativity born of the earth yet transcending it, like roots gripping stone while branches reach toward light. Forgotten materials, fading beliefs, and repetitive gestures of labour are here given new life and breath. Breathing through creation, sensing through matter, these artists forge a new rhythm between the physical and the spiritual, allowing the world, once more, to glimpse the luminous soul of the islands born of fire.
