REDBASE Art Space: Arya Sudrajat

Indonesia Artist
Arya Sudrajat

ARTIST BIO

Arya was born in 1983 in Jelekong, West Java., currently lives and works in Bandung, West Java which is also the place where he discovered his talent for painting.

Arya Sudrajat's concept is re-presents objects from their surroundings—particularly those that once served a function but now remain only as traces, known in Sundanese as ruruntuk. This term emerged from the technical and habitual painting practices in Jelekong and reflects a shared local vocabulary. By incorporating fragments of Jelekong’s locality, the artist creates paintings and installations that merge collective visual memories of Jelekong painters with imagery found outside the area. Inspired by traditional fabric prints from Jelekong, these visuals are transferred onto canvas, which, along with found objects and used canvases, are further transformed into installation works.

Arya Sudrajat has participated in several exhibitions, both solo and group, with a strong engagement at Redbase Foundation. His solo exhibition Artifacts Ruruntuk (2023) and group show A to T – The Journey No. 1 (2023) were both held at Redbase Yogyakarta.

He has participated in several exhibitions at regional and national levels, including the West Java Fine Arts Biennale and programs affiliated with Galeri Nasional Indonesia.
