Indonesia Artist
Abdi Setiawan

ARTIST BIO

Abdi Setiawan, born in 1971 in Sicincin, West Sumatra, graduated from School of Visual Arts at the Indonesian Institute of Art, Yogyakarta. He works mostly in the medium of sculpture. He has been actively participating in exhibitions since he graduated in 2003 from the Craft Department of the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta. Abdi straightforwardly combines "real" tangible materials with "artificial" wooden human materials. The aim to display the identity of the figure is considered the reason why Abdi chose this method. In his work, Abdi no longer sees any urgency in the use of artificial materials. Until 2019, Abdi has held dozens of joint exhibitions, and five solo exhibitions. Two of his solo exhibitions were held in Belgium, with the title "New Sculpture", at Andre' Simoens Gallery, Knokke-Zoute. And in the Netherlands under the title "New Sculptures", at Metis Gallery, Amsterdam. Abdi was also a finalist for the Phillip Morris Art Award in 2001.
