ARTIST BIO

Muhammad Akbar was born in 1984 in Bandung, Indonesia. He earned his Bachelor's degree in French Language Education from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) in 2007 and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 2012.

Akbar works primarily with video and moving images, focusing on the relationship between spectacle and spectator—how individuals become both subjects of observation and observers themselves. His practice often explores visual control, digital culture, and social dynamics. He is also known under the stage name Killafternoon as a VJ and motion graphic artist, often collaborating with musicians and subcultural collectives.

In 2016, Muhammad Akbar participated in the group exhibition Neglected Ordinaries at Redbase Foundation, Yogyakarta.

Akbar has received several recognitions for his contributions to contemporary media art. He won First Prize at the ASEAN New Media Art Competition in 2007 for his work Young Tourist from the Near Countries, and in 2013 he was awarded Second Prize at the Bandung Contemporary Art Award (BaCAA) and received the Madya Award from the Indonesia Art Awards. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and residencies, including the Shanghai Biennale (2012), Media Art Kitchen (Japan Foundation), LaSalle College of the Arts, and Art:1 Gallery, Jakarta.
