MAGNIFYcent is a REDBASE Curatorial project that showcases the first time in Melbourne, significant artworks by five Asian contemporary artists that are enhanced by a closer look into their detailed techniques and the delicate origins of their materials. Each artwork is deeply considered by the choice to invite the audience in to reveal their deeper meanings.
Through hand drawings seemingly made from mechanical lines, Cheolyu Kim precise and delicate formations of dreamscapes explore his haunted upbringing near the DMZ boarder in Korea. The straw paintings of Shen Shaomin rendered in hyper-realism on rice paper as a statement of hope for humankinds harmonious relationship the natural world. Central to the exhibition, hand embroidery installations of Winter-Bathroom by Gao Rong deceives the eyes evoke the memory of making it as an artist in the bustling urban city of Beijing. Artist Ari Bayuaji pushes the boundaries of fibre arts, with the woven tapestries of being partly made from plastic ropes washed ashore in Bali to mediate on our environmental precarity. Meanwhile, Chen Gelin explores light through three-dimensional fibre works, drawing inspiration from Guangxi’s strong textile traditions to imagine new, future-facing forms. Each artist examines human ingenuity and desire in relation to their societal and environmental conditions that reveal themselves through enhanced perceptions with their work.
