MAGNIFYcent is a REDBASE Curatorial project that showcases the first time in Melbourne, significant artworks by five Asian contemporary artists that are enhanced by a closer look into their technical and material origins.
The exhibition features several optical devices to enhance the reading of the works; be it the hand drawings of Cheolyu Kim seemingly made from mechanical lines or the straw paintings of Shen Shaomin rendered in hyper-realism on rice paper. Central to the exhibition, the installation Winter-Bathroom by Gao Rong deceives the eyes through hand embroidery. Other works push the boundaries of fibre arts, with the woven tapestries of Ari Bayuaji being partly made from plastic ropes washed ashore, or the examinations of light by Chen Gelin through three-dimensional fibre compositions influenced by the weaving of the Hakka and the brocade patterns of the Zhuang.

We pay our respects to the Gundungurra people who are the traditional custodians of the land. We acknowledge Elders past, present and emerging for their immense spiritual connection to place which was never ceded.
