AT A GLANCE

SPATIAL ROOM NO.2 - Paul Bai's Solo Exhibition

The exhibition design comes from the idea of creating a ‘spatial room’ which references to German artist Erich Buchholz’s painted Berlin studio in 1922. Buchholz was the first artist in the Western art history to contextualise his abstraction paintings with the architectural setting.

Different from Buchholz, the spatial room I am presenting is based on the ‘in-between’ spatial moments, which can be conceptual, physical and experiential. The orange paintings in the exhibition (both watercolour and acrylic works) explore the similar colour effects of sunrise and sunset (East and West). Through the visual confusion, these works suggest that the so-called sunrise and sunset, East and West are our subjective perceptions of time and space, we are constantly living in between these artificial notions.

The title of black dot/mirror work is The Infinite Distance Between Two Points (No.10). By using the mirror to reflect the black dot on the opposing wall, the work presents a spatial moment that is crossing between the virtual and actual dimensions. The two black dot print is part of edition of 25 —The Infinite Distance Between Two Points (No.9), inkjet on archival paper, 42 x 59.5cm, 2022.

The title of black watercolour work is Untitled (Study for line, form, inter-zone, night sky and other in-between moments (No.3), this work intends to represent the in-between moment that is shared by various opposing notions such as up and down, form and line, abstraction and representation or the darkness between sunset and sunrise.
